About Us

Advanced Screen Printing for the slack-jawed masses!
WHO WE ARE

D-Lab is a full-service screen printing company. We print custom apparel for companies and individuals ranging from garage-based start-ups to those with corporate towers dominating the downtown skyline. What originally started as a sampling shop to sell clothing lines to America’s major retailers has morphed into a high-end custom garment decoration facility. If you want something truly unique, we’re the ones to give you what no one else can. Waterbased printing, glitter, foil, special effects, wild print locations, we do all the hard stuff, and we do it every day!

WHY WE’RE DIFFERENT

We pride ourselves on making apparel people want to wear, not just toss in the back of the closet. It all starts with great artwork, and D-Lab is home to some of the best artists in the free world. We’ll create an amazing piece of art, choose garments and colors that complement it, and print it with style and feel in mind. We endeavor to print with the softest hand we can get, refusing to sell you a nice shirt with a cardboard ink blob on it. If something won’t work, we’ll let you know before printing and offer great alternatives. If something makes it to press and doesn’t look right, we’ll tweak it to make it right. We do not print indiscriminately.

Questions On Your Mind

+
How much does a shirt cost?
We’re 100% custom, full-service decorators, so there are quite a few moving parts to this equation. It all starts with the cost of the goods and any art fees, followed by screens, print pricing (based on number of colors and locations), any finishing costs that go with it, and shipping costs. When asking for a quote, please supply a preview of the art and a description of what garments you want to print on, we can have you a quote in minutes!
+
Do you have minimums?
We do, and those minimums depend on the number of colors required. For instance: to print more than four colors, the minimum starts at 144 pieces. If you must have the color capacity but do not wish to meet the minimum piece requirement, then we will up-charge to meet the minimum print price.
+
I’ve got my own art, how do I let you know what colors to use?
All color matching is done via the Pantone Matching System. Every color is assigned a number. We use the Pantone Solid Coated and Solid Uncoated books for matching. Please refer to Pantone numbers when calling out colors. Autumn Solstice Orange, Corduroy Fantasy Beige and Insider Trading Green are color names that work well for Martha Stewart’s latest line of interior paints, not so well for us. Stick to the number. If you’re unsure, let us pick for you.
+
Can I get a sample printed?
You can, but it would be more fun for us to get water-boarded. Samples are $250 plus screen charges and art time. We will print up to 12 garments per design. We’re very good at what we do, and we wouldn’t print anything we think might get returned. Statistically, our customers ask for samples only on orders over 100 dozen.
+
How soon can i get my order?
Our standard turn time is 5-10 business days. The clock starts when all goods are checked in and final art is approved.
+
What brand of shirts do you use?
Any brand and style you want. We do not stock garments, so we will order anything you need.
+
What is an underbase?
An underbase is a layer of white or clear ink that is laid down before the rest of the colors are printed on the garment. Adding this extra layer of ink allows the top colors to print bright on dark garments. Underbases are charged as one extra color when pricing.
+
Can you print over seams?
We can and often do. This works best with water-based inks. Keep in mind that there will be slight irregularities near the seams. We try to design around this as best we can to minimize the effects.
+
My order is short, don’t you guys know how to count?
If your order is short, it is because there were misprints. The industry standard is 2% per print for plastisol, and 4% for discharge printing. If you need an exact number, please let us know so we can supply extras. You will not be charged for 2% underage, but you will be charged on overages up to 2%.
+
I got my order and something is terribly wrong! What do i do?
Remain calm and then immediately go buy a lottery ticket, as this almost never happens. Despite constant accusations of being a race of sentient machines, we’re human, too. If you have an issue, please call us immediately! We will do our best to fix any issues as quickly as possible.
+
Do you offer credit terms?
For new customers applying for Net-30 terms, a credit application is required and credit references must be approved. If you need to order before credit is established, then full or partial payment will be required before production. Payment amount depends on order size.
+
What types of art files are acceptable?
All files must be sent at full size, 300dpi or higher. Send Adobe Photoshop for raster files, and Adobe Illustrator for vector art. Make sure to attach font files for text or convert all type to outlines. If you’re thinking to yourself, “Surely, this jpeg from the internet is good enough,” nope! If a file is sent and we can’t easily work with it, we’ll have to charge for the artist’s time to prepare it for printing. MS Paint, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint files cannot be accepted. We also do not accept art or mock-ups created from a “Design Your Own T-Shirt” site.
+
What are your print sizes?
Our standard size is up to 15” x 18.” Oversize printing is up to 20” x 24.” Oversize printing is not recommended on Small and Medium size garments.
+
Do you do four-color process (cmyk) printing?
Did you read the part about the water-boarding? Any designs that need high detail or photo-quality prints will use the Simulated Process printing method. It requires more colors, but it results in a more consistent print across a wider variety of garments.
+
Do you do rush orders?
We do, and pricing is subject to rush charges. Charges are affected by due date, difficulty of print, and current phase of the moon.
+
Can I order a rainbow of tees?
You can order multiple shirt colors for your unicorn fiesta, but keep in mind that not all art works on all colors. You will need an under-base on dark garments. Discharge printing is also unfriendly on some dyes.
+
Will this color shirt discharge properly?
Not all dyes are made the same, and neither is the Cholera-laden water at your friendly offshore dye factory! Discharge (water-based) ink is intended for 100% cotton garments with reactive dyes. Mid-blues, greens, turquoises, and purple dyes do not discharge. The synthetic fabrics in blended tees also will not discharge. We can print with water-based ink and the print will be soft, just not bright. Keep this in mind during the design and garment selection phase of your apparel order.
+
Can I get a custom neck label printed on my garment?
You sure can, we do it all the time. We will design a label for you with your logo and fill out all the pertinent information, like country of origin, fabric content, and care instructions. Labels are printed in white, mid-gray, or black depending on the garment color. If you choose a garment that does not have tear-away tags, there is a small up-charge and additional time added to production.
+
Do you offer blind shipping?
Yes, our shipping department puts on sunglasses and channels the spirit of Ray Charles. They’re great at it! No one will ever know you didn’t print the goods yourself!
+
I got my order and it was more than I dreamed possible! Can I tell my friends?
Glad we could make that happen for you, and yes, please do! Most of our business is due to repeat customers, and we strive to keep it that way.
